PBA puts up Referees Academy

MANILA

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), in its latest move to strengthen further the technical side of its organization, has announced the opening of a Referees Academy for prospective game officials.

“We are accepting applicants for training to eventually be part of the PBA referees pool,” said PBA operations and technical chief Rickie Santos.

“Applicants will be screened and those who pass the screenings will be taken in as academicians.”

The creation of the Referees Academy, which is envisioned to be a continuing program, is in line with the PBA’s efforts to uplift the standard of officiating and further professionalize the ranks of the game officials. Those accepted into the Academy will receive allowances even while in training.

Santos said the league prefers former PBA or PBL players who have earned at least 72 units in college, or college graduates with or without officiating experience. Applicants must be between 25 to 35 years of age.

Veteran international referee Romy Guevara has been tasked to handle the academy.

The Academicians will undergo classroom and on court training to be familiar with basketball playing rules and mechanics of officiating.

Character and personality development as well as communication skills enhancement are other areas the Academy will work on.

The PBA is likewise looking at tie-ups with other basketball leagues to give the Academicians maximum exposure and get them ready for pressure-packed situations game officials regularly face in the pro league.

Interested parties may apply directly during office hours at the PBA office at 186 E. Rodriguez Jr. Ave., Libis, Quezon City or call Mr. Junior Bengua at 638-1815 to 17. (PNA)
