FILIPINOS Roberto Racasa and Johann Randall Abrina and their fellow memory maestros will be strutting their mental stuff when the much awaited 2010 UK Open International Memory Championships gets underway on August 26 and 27 at the MWB Business Exchange in One Kingdom Street, Paddington in London.
"We are ready," said Abrina, a registered nurse and a sports psychology UP student from Barangay WackWack, Mandaluyong.
" We hope to perform well in this prestigious event," added Racasa, a former PUP chess player and "kristo" or bet taker in a cockfigthing arena from Barangka, Marikina and adopted son of Mandaluyong City.
Mandaluyong City mayor Benhur Abalos Jr., the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) through its’ General Manager (GM) Atty. Jose Ferdinand "Joy" Rojas II and chairman Margie Juico, representative Bernadette Herrera-Dy of Bagong Henerasyon Party-List, sportsman Hermie Esguerra of Herma Group of companies, Philip Ella Juico,Dr and Dra Manny and Regina Canlas, AVP for marketing Cheryl Felizardo of Natrapharm-Patriot Group Inc., Filway Marketings Inc. CEO/ President Hector Tagaysay, Sebastian Chua , Terry Capistrano and Willy Ortiz of ACCEL backed the Filipino campaign in this prestigious event that was conceptualized 18 years back.
""It will be a big challenge for our players, especially it would mark the first time that RP would field representatives, which in this case are Roberto (Racasa) and Johann Randall (Abrina)," said RP team manager Aurelio" Reli" De Leon. Delegation Head/ Coach is RP and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.
The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO)-Mandaluyong, Bagong Henerasyon RP Memory Team schedule to left the country late Tuesday aboard Emirates Airlines.
According to Christopher "Chris" Day, General-Secretary of the organizing World Memory Sports Council under its founding head Mind mopping inventor Tony Buzan and chess grandmaster Raymond Keene, a total of fifteen countries competing that includes reigning and three-time World Champion Ben Pridmore and past World Champion Andi Bell of the United Kingdom.
Aside from UK and neophyte Philippines, there are also competitors from Germany, Austria, Turkey, Netherlands, USA, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Austria, Ireland, Slovenia, Lithuania and Nigeria.
The annual competition was instituted to challenge the limits of human memory consisting of 10 events like binary digits (5 minutes/30 min.), numbers (5/30 min), spoken numbers, speed cards, cards (10/30min/1 hour), random words, historic/future dates, names and faces, abstract images.
