Irish bishop Pat Buckley’s gay marriage ceremony with his Pinoy boyfriend, chef Eduardo Yango, which was due to go ahead in Larne, Northern Ireland has been deferred for the time being
Mr Yango has seemingly been disturbed because of the negative publicity that has been attracted by this rather unconventional union, known as a civil partnership in the UK.
“You don’t expect a little tinpot civil partnership in Larne to be reported all around the world. I’m a little bit disappointed, but at the same time I’m a realist.” said Buckley who has gone from being a Catholic priest, unfrocked, and now an Independent Catholic bishop.
This statement, however, does not quite tally with the fact that he attempted to have Max Clifford handle publicity for his "civil partnership". A call to his (Clifford's) office resulted in the reply that they declined to handle the matter. Max Clifford is probably Britain's most high profile publicist to whom a host of celebrities and others go to when in trouble or want high payments from the press for their stories.
Bishop Buckley is no stranger to controversy and publicity. He has been cast out of the regular Catholic Church in Ireland and has been a thorn in their side since. For 25 years he has courted publicity and confrontation. Now he has it in RP as well as the rest of the world.
He also "ordained" female Irish singer Sinead O'Connor as a Catholic priest a few years ago.
Although "temorararily" halted, if it goes ahead, it will be the first time a priest has entered into a gay marriage. No doubt the Vatican will be watching events closely.
