Prime suspect in Maguindanao Massacre caught out lying to judge
The main suspect in the November massacre that left at least 57 dead has been caught out lying to the court at his preliminary appearance.
Andal Ampatuan Jr claimed in court he was unable to speak either Filipino or English and was only able to speak in Maguindanaon. However, a persual of video footage from the time immediately after his arrest clearly shows him speaking from behind bars to reporters in Filipino (Tagalog).
The video below shows him answering questions at time points 1.30, 1.54 and 2.06 in Filipino.
"He only speaks Maguindanaon" Judge Reyes was told.
The judge pulled up Fortun when he said he would ask if Ampatuan understood Tagalog. The judge instructed him to ask if he "understands Filipino."
A rapid consultation happened and defense attorney Fortun stated that his client was "willing" to have the charges read to him in English.
Ampatuan then pled not guilty to 41 counts of murder he is currently charged with.
If the accused and his counsel had only just met immediately prior to the hearing, this apparent confusion would be understandable. The truth is rather more prosaic.
