[More]Europe, Unemployment and Instability
By George Friedman
The global financial crisis of 2008 has slowly yielded to a global unemployment crisis. This unemployment crisis will, fairly quickly, give way to a political crisis. The crisis involves all three of the major pillars of the global system -- Europe, China and the United States.
The level of intensity differs, the political response differs and the relationship to the financial crisis differs.
But there is a common element, which is that unemployment is increasingly replacing finance as the central problem of the financial system.

Filipino Farmers - A Dying Breed?
Historically, as countries have industrialized, the number of small farms has dwindled, with workers opting for city life. But the Philippine government is concerned that this trend could exacerbate food insecurity in an import-dependent country already struggling to meet current...current food demand.
"The average age of the Filipino farmer is 57. Assuming an average life span of 70, we might reach a critical [shortage] of farmers in just 15 years," said Asterio Saliot, director of the Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Training Institute.
Alternative Energy Source Could Alter Geo-Political Balance
The Geopolitics of Shale
By Robert D. Kaplan
According to the elite newspapers and journals of opinion, the future of foreign affairs mainly rests on ideas: the moral impetus for humanitarian intervention, the various theories governing exchange rates and debt rebalancing necessary to fix Europe, the rise of cosmopolitanism alongside the stubborn vibrancy of nationalism in East Asia and so on. As the 20th century showed us, ideologies -- whether communism, fascism or humanism -- matter and matter greatly.

[More]Pop-Up Housing Project Adaptable Worldwide
A competition for a social housing project in London has thrown up a winning team with a novel and very interesting solution to short term housing provision, especially for single homeless.
Although thought out specifically with London's own social problems (and solutions) in mind, with a bit of ingenuity this could easily be tweaked for use in the Philippines.
